What are Valve Terminals? How do they work?

A valve terminal is a modular pneumatic control system that integrates multiple valves into a compact unit, enabling centralized control of multiple pneumatic actuators from a single point. Compared to traditional individual valve installations, valve island systems represent a significant advancement, offering significant advantages in space, efficiency, and maintenance.


Typical valve terminal system includes:


  • Subplate or manifold: A structure that supports the valve and provides internal passageways for air distribution.
  • Pneumatic valves: Typically solenoid valves that control air flow to the actuators.
  • Electrical control systems: This may include multi-pole connections, fieldbus communication, or direct control.
  • Accessories: These include silencers, pressure regulators, and connectors.


How a valve terminal works in pneumatic operation

  1. The operation of a valve terminal is based on a relatively simple but effective principle:
  2. Compressed air enters the terminals through the main connection.
  3. The air is distributed internally through channels within the baseplate.
  4. Individual solenoid valves mounted on the baseplate control the flow of air to the working ports.
  5. When the solenoid valve is activated by an electrical signal, it allows air to pass through to the corresponding actuator.

How to Select Right Valve Island Size for Specific Pneumatic System?

To determine the appropriate size of a valve island, use the following simplified formula:


  1. Calculate the total air consumption (in CFM) of all controlled actuators.
  2. Apply a simultaneity factor (the percentage of actuators operating simultaneously).
  3. Add a 20-30% safety margin for future expansion or consumption changes.


For example, if you have 10 cylinders, each consuming 1.8 CFM, and you estimate 70% will operate simultaneously:

Required flow = 10 cylinders × 1.8 CFM × 0.7 (simultaneity factor) × 1.3 (safety margin) = 16.4 CFM
